Summary

An eighty-year-old man is found murdered in his home。 His age and standing in the community makes finding his killer difficult – why would anyone harm an elderly man? What threat could he possibly be to anyone?

With no apparent motive, DS George Cross canvases the community for potential suspects but the man was known as generous, charitable, community-minded。 Each interview about who the man is muddies the picture further。 So Cross decides to look for who he was – revealing a past that is far less honourable than his present 。 。 。

Intriguing and engaging murder mystery with plenty of leads and red herrings and some excellent well developed characters。The prose is quite tongue in cheek and there are some real gems of one liners which had me giggling to myself。 There are also some very poignant comments on life and death and mourning those who have left us which were exquisitely written and excellently observed。 It has a feel of cosy crime and isn’t overly gory so it was a great book to snuggle up with on a bleak winter eve Intriguing and engaging murder mystery with plenty of leads and red herrings and some excellent well developed characters。The prose is quite tongue in cheek and there are some real gems of one liners which had me giggling to myself。 There are also some very poignant comments on life and death and mourning those who have left us which were exquisitely written and excellently observed。 It has a feel of cosy crime and isn’t overly gory so it was a great book to snuggle up with on a bleak winter evening, a bit like Sunday night tv。 My copy was an excerpt of an advance reader copy so the ‘ending’ definitely left me wanting to know more。 。。。more

I would like to thank Netgalley and Aria & Aries for an advance copy of The Teacher, the sixth novel to feature DS George Cross of Avon and Somerset Police。Pensioner Alistair Moreton is found dead at the bottom of his stairs。 It looks like a fall until a stab wound is discovered。 He was charitably described as cantankerous, so the list of suspects is long。 Nevertheless George is determined to get him justice。I thoroughly enjoyed The Teacher, which is a fun read with a very good whodunnit attache I would like to thank Netgalley and Aria & Aries for an advance copy of The Teacher, the sixth novel to feature DS George Cross of Avon and Somerset Police。Pensioner Alistair Moreton is found dead at the bottom of his stairs。 It looks like a fall until a stab wound is discovered。 He was charitably described as cantankerous, so the list of suspects is long。 Nevertheless George is determined to get him justice。I thoroughly enjoyed The Teacher, which is a fun read with a very good whodunnit attached。 It is told from the investigative point of view with George being the main voice。 I like this approach as it offers a broader perspective on events than just George’s while maintaining the mystery of who and why。 It offers an immersive read and allows the reader the opportunity to work it out for themselves。 I can honestly say that I didn’t have a clue。George has an autism spectrum condition (that his new preferred description for what he used to call Asperger’s)。 It gives him an eye for detail and a corresponding high solve rate, but it also means that he has no social skills。 He takes everything literally, has no sense of humour and no idea of small talk。 The humour comes from everyone else’s interactions with him as he tends to leave them flummoxed。 He is a wonderful creation so kudos are due to the author for making his neurodivergence positive。The plot held my attention throughout。 George’s usual partner DS Josie Ottey is on leave so he has to work with DI Robert Warner on the investigation。 It’s a partnership made in hell as there is no common ground in their work with one taking a methodical, evidence based approach while the other believes in his gut instinct for a quick result。 It doesn’t turn out well。 Meanwhile George ploughs through his list of suspects slowly ruling them in for further investigation or out for various reasons。 It’s a slow process but each aspect absorbing in its own way。The Teacher is a good read that I have no hesitation in recommending。 。。。more

As such, I was really excited to get the opportunity to get an advanced reading copy of The Teacher, the sixth book in the series。 This book centres on the Cross’s investigation of an elderly former Headmaster, Alistair Moreton, in a village outside of Bristol。 DS Cross normally works with DS Josie Ottey, with whom he has built up a good working relationship based on a mutual respect and they work together well。 Cross is neurodivergent and Ottey is understanding and helps Cross。 Unfortunately, Ottey has taken annual leave to move house and Cross has been partnered with a DI Bobby Warner from Kent Police。 Not only does Cross have the investigate Moreton’s murder, he also has to work alongside someone completely new, which isn’t without its challenges for Cross。 As said, I’m a massive fan of this series of books and have grown very fond of the other characters in the book including George’s father Raymond, Stephen the vicar, Ottey, Mackenzie, Swift and Christine。 They all respect and care for George, which you makes you care for them even more as the reader。 I loved the twists and turns in the investigation。 You always know George is going to the murderer, but the journey is always interesting。 I can’t wait to read the next instalment! I received a copy of this novel from Netgalley。 This was my first read in the series。 I quite liked DS Cross as he was thorough although this meant he investigated ALL suspects in painstaking detail。 The story was good but I felt it dragged on too long。 The sub-plot was not required and I felt it didn’t add to the story。 Maybe I needed to read the racket books in this series。 I will more than likely read them and the next in the series。

His son is a media savvy, right wing MP, facing a byelection, keeping a close eye on the investigation。 Whilst Warner goes ahead with arresting Barnaby with what looks like sufficient evidence, George is not happy, feeling more inquiries are needed。Sullivan does a stellar job in developing George's character over him coming to terms with his father, Raymond's growing relationship with his mother, Christine。 Additionally, there is the intelligent development of DCI Ben Carson, whose changing circumstances make him far more amenable to Josie's request for leave, and apart from the blip in initially supporting Warner, his wholeheartedly backs George, referring to him as Sherlock Holmes in comparison to Warner's Inspector Clouseau。 We discover just how nasty a piece of work Warner is with the inclusion of a horror of a gritty contemporary storyline when it comes to the police, involving Alice, with Carson putting his full weight behind his support of Alice。 A brilliant addition to a brilliant crime series! The deeper George digs, the more the questionmarks appear。 However, what is patently obvious from the start is that Warner and George are on a collision course。 This is another excellent addition to a series, which I really like。 I love George who has become a firm favourite in police procedural/mystery/thrillers。 He has autism spectrum disorder or condition as he prefers, which makes him an excellent officer as his record substantiates。 Such a pity that Warner doesn’t appreciate George in the way he should be appreciatedbut what this does do is to create a fascinating storyline。 Warner starts off as arrogantly obnoxious and becomes even more odious with time and parts of this storytelling are dark。 There’s some excellent interaction between George and Warner, one which is farcically funny but it becomes less funny with every passing offensive insult from Warner。 Whilst he is a character to loathe he does bring a gritty edge to the evolving multilayered plot。 The deeper George’s investigation into Morton goes, the more cans of worms are opened with a widening suspect pool。 Morton proves to be a man who invokes strong emotions, especially from his time when he was a headteacher。 I love that George ploughs his own furrow with a little help from his friends, police staff officer Alice McKenzie, forensic investigator Dr Michael Swift, and of course, Josie Ottey。 George is more than capable of getting one over on Warner and as always, I totally root for him。There is much to praise here。 There’s just the right blend of the personal with the investigation。 As ever the dynamics between George, his wonderful father Raymond, and his mother, Christine, newly back into his life, are a source of fascination。 It’s complex and never dull。 There are some terrific scenes, such as in the interview room and in the court room with some scenes that make you gasp in shock。Overall, this is yet another well written novel which has me gripped throughout。 Will George get his “man“ or will Warner beat him to it? With thanks to NetGalley and especially to Aria and Aries for the much appreciated arc in return for an honest review。 。。。more

This is a sample from the next book in the DS Cross series and what a teaser! I am sure this will be another excellent read from the author。 I love the writing style and character development, the plotting is clever and Cross's autism is described skilfully。 I am sure this will be a great addition to the series。 Thanks to Net Galley for my ARC。 This is a sample from the next book in the DS Cross series and what a teaser! This is the first Tim Sullivan book I’ve read but I’m definitely going to look for his previous George Cross stories as I absolutely loved his character。 The book itself is slow paced but still very engrossing and both how DS Cross mentally processes things due to his Autism Spectrum Disorder and how others respond to him makes for brilliant reading never mind the investigation itself。 I really enjoyed the secondment of DI Warner whose approach to investigating is the polar opposite to DS Cross This is the first Tim Sullivan book I’ve read but I’m definitely going to look for his previous George Cross stories as I absolutely loved his character。 The book itself is slow paced but still very engrossing and both how DS Cross mentally processes things due to his Autism Spectrum Disorder and how others respond to him makes for brilliant reading never mind the investigation itself。 I really enjoyed the secondment of DI Warner whose approach to investigating is the polar opposite to DS Cross but some of his actions such as the desk situation genuinely got me cross on Cross’s behalf, totally wrongly handled imho however the side story involving Warner was also incredibly relevant。 My suspicions as to the perpetrator were correct but the process of Cross getting there was compelling and highly enjoyable。 9/10 。。。more

Aaargh! No no no !!!! George Cross has to be my favourite detective, above all others。 With his partner Ottey (who is on leave in this book) his place on The Spectrum, a measure of autism and Asperger's, allows his brain to plainly see logical patterns of behaviour not always clear to lesser mortals。 This is a thumping good story, however when I requested the book, I was so excited to think I might get a copy that the fact it is just Chapters 1 - 19。 I just got to the end of Chapter 19 and feel Aaargh!
